The Emir of Borgu, Nigeria, Sen Haliru Dantoro, recently appealed to the members of the National Assembly in an attempt to right the wrongs that have been committed against the people of Borgu. The Emir has called for the new headquarters of the proposed Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) be relocated to New Bussa.
Many lives have been lost and several communities have been submerged due to perennial flooding caused by the release of excess water from the Kainji and Jebba dams, which feed the close by hydro-powered station. After construction of the Kainji dam, many Borgu lost their ancestral homes, farmlands and fishing waters, thereby causing economical stress.
District Head of New Bussa, Alhaji Mohammed Musa, represented the people of Borgu by demanding payment of 17% derivation from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, (PHCN) for all revenues generated from the hydropower stations, and payment of royalty and tenement rates by all federal establishments and institutions in the area.
