Botswana Takes Stance on Energy Shortage

Botswana’s Deputy Permanent Secretary for Minerals, Energy, and Water Resources Boikobo Paya said that the launch of the Energy and Environment Partnership in Southern and East Africa (EEP) will make a greater effort to solve the regional power shortage.

Paya said the EEP will contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals which strive to increase access to sustainable energy services derived from renewable energy sources. He said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and eight partners including Botswana, Austrian Development Cooperation, and the Development Bank of Southern Africa were launching the program in the region.

For his part, Petri Wanner from the Finnish Foreign Affairs ministry explained that the EEP’s regional focus was important as it will allow countries to share international best practices. The program will provide financing for feasibility studies as well as pilot and demonstration projects.
