Bringing Solar Energy Tech into the 3D Future

MIT researchers are not only trying to explore ways to decrease the costs of solar technology, but the researchers are also attempting to create solar energy panels in a three-dimensional prototype.

The study results were published in the Energy and Environmental Science journal showcasing the new design as yielding up to 20 times the amount of energy as compared to the flat-surfaced panels. These cube-shaped modules have the advantage to be placed in various locations unlike conventional solar panels which were previously only able to lie on flat surfaces.

However, while the group has developed a new version of solar panels, it will still take some time to be cost competitive to the traditional flat panels which are still out of the reach of many poorer economies.
