Bujagali Hydropower Project Taking a Hit From Locals

Italian firm, Salini, and Bujagali Energy Ltd., have had efforts to build a hydropower site, hindered by sabotage. The Bujagali hydropower dam is due to be commissioned by 2011, and will increase “clean” power supply to Uganda

Various acts of sabotage, including theft of construction equipment, have plagued the project. Recently, two casual laborers were shot by soldiers guarding the project site as they tried to make off with tires; one subsequently died.

John Lockwood, project engineer, said the thefts affected not only the contractor, but also the country. He also explained that thieves and vandals could lead to the delay of the implementation of the hydropower project.
