The Nachtigal hydropower project commissioned its first turbine on May 10, sending electricity into Cameroon’s national grid. The first phase has a capacity of 60 MW.
There are six additional units at the Nachtigal project that will be brought online in phases, all expected to be online by the end of the year with a total capacity of 420 MW. The electricity produced will support both residential and industry demand and there are plans to export up to 100 MW of electricity to neighboring countries.
Water and Energy Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba was on hand for the commissioning along with a number of Cameroonian government officials.
The project is being led by EDF, the Cameroonian government, and the IFC, with World Bank guarantees.
