Off the west coast of Africa, Spain’s El Hierro Island is using 100% renewable energy, a mix of wind and hydropower. The most remote of the Canary Islands is claiming to be the world’s first energy self-sufficient, off-grid island. Previously the island was using 40,000 barrels of oil annually to power generators because as an active volcanic island, it was unable to be connected to Spain’s power grid.
A $110-million wind and hydropower station was inaugurated in the summer. By the end of 2014, the Gorona del Viento plant will generate all of the island’s energy needs totaling around 48 GW each year.
