A Cape Verde resident is looking to bring US state New Hampshire-made wind turbines to the island nation by July creating Cape Verde Wind LLC.
Julio Rodrigues returned to his native Cape Verde in 2000 with the dreams of helping electrify the country with more sustainable energy methods rather than the diesel power plants currently supplying most of the electricity. With the help of Aeronautica VP and co-founder Brian Kuhn and city council member Jass Stewart, the partnership is in the “final stages” of signing a PPA to supply 10 MW of power to Cape Verde via wind energy.
The initial project will cost about $45 million and use 15 750-kw wind turbines with a diesel backup. One of the turbines will power the desalinization plant, which would produce 1.3 million gallons of water a day, Kuhn said to Enterprise News. “If we get the first project right, there’s five or six others waiting right behind it,” Kuhn added.
