CDM Exec Board Calls for Solutions

The executive board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has called for inputs on operation efficiency and how to address distribution issues.

The board agreed to dedicate extra days to discuss these issues at its meeting scheduled from May 27-29 in Bonn, Germany. The first call is for inputs on efficiency in the operation of the CDM and opportunities for its improvement. The second call is for Designated National Authorities (DNAs) to provide inputs on how to address issues relating to regional distribution of CDM projects.

DNAs are requested to provide inputs on ways to streamline the process relating to CDM projects in countries hosting fewer than 10 registered projects, especially least developed countries, small island developing states and Africa, as requested by the 4th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol. The two calls are open until 4 May 2009.

Adjustments to CDMs are necessary as projects are anticipated to increase. Anton-Louis Olivier, managing director of NuPlanet Clean Energy, said that as energy prices continue to rise, the CDM market would continue to grow. And the addition of the feed-in tariffs becoming more widespread would also provide a boost to the sector.
