China’s Interest in South African Nuclear Plans

South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed in February that the country was looking to expand its nuclear ambitions saying: "We expect to conclude the procurement of 9,600 MW of nuclear energy." And it appears to have peaked the interest of China. South Africa’s Energy Minister Ben Martins and China’s National Energy Commission Vice Administrator Tan Rongyao discussed the possibility of the Asian country to participate in South Africa’s nuclear sector.

China proposed an agreement, still under consideration by both parties, covering the supply of nuclear energy products, infrastructure funding, supplier development and localization, skills development, and research and development.
