Construction on Stiegler’s Gorge hydropower project in Tanzania is expected to start within three months, according to Minister of Energy Medard Kalemani.
“Currently, the Ministry is finalizing the selection process for the company to build the plant. The ministry is also setting up a structure whose purpose will be to facilitate the implementation of the project,” said Kalemani.
The dam with a projected capacity of 2,100 MW will be located on the Rufiji River, which runs through the Selous Game Reserve. It will enable the country to double its estimated electrical power to 1,513 MW. According to Kalemani, the installation of the plant will take about 36 months and should come into service by 2021.
