Desertec Moves Full Throttle with Algeria’s Sonelgaz

The Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) and Algeria’s state-owned Sonelgaz signed an agreement for further collaboration on expanding the Sahara solar scheme. The activities on both sides of this partnership will promote industrial cooperation in Algeria, including the creation of jobs. The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting between Algeria and the EU on renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Chairman of Sonelgaz, Noureddine Boutarfa: "The development of renewable energies is of strategic importance to Algeria. With electricity from renewable sources accounting for 40% of the domestic energy mix by 2030, Algeria will be making its own contribution towards the new era of sustainable energy. With an appropriate framework, in fact, 10 GW of solar energy can be exported to Europe."

Paul van Son, CEO of DII: "Algeria offers perfect sites to continue the implementation of the Desertec vision. Sonelgaz and DII will join forces to establish renewable energy from the Algerian deserts for sustainable energy supply both for Algeria and Europe. We can only master the challenges of the future together in close partnership with the countries on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea.”
