Participants at a government-hosted workshop in Tanzania are pushing to have geothermal energy included in Tanzania’s Energy Policy as well as the new addition, Renewable Energy Policy. The country is gearing up to drill its first geothermal well this year and the government is looking to identify ways to create an effective legal and regulatory framework to support geothermal development.
In addition, the group also mentioned establishing a geothermal division within the Department of Energy. Participants said, “There has to be clarity on the roles and responsibilities of the public and private sectors in various aspects and geothermal development, from resource exploration, to power development and the Geothermal Division should be appropriately staffed with competent experts.”
