Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is starting the process of holding exams within the upcoming week taken by 11 applicants to name an official in charge of the country’s relations with other Nile Basin countries.
The chairman of the Nile water sector for Egypt’s national security will test experts who work within the ministry and/or have prior experience working on the Nile Basin Initiative. Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Hashim Qandeel said this is the first time for the Ministry to organize such tests for the post.
In mid-July, Egypt faced a cabinet reshuffle which saw Qandeel, former head of the Ministry’s Nile Department, take his current post. The North African country has tried to maintain its stronghold over the Nile’s water resources despite other Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) countries’ attempt to gain more control. However, Egypt and Sudan have been unable to flex their muscles with the recent political struggles.
