Egypt Plans Solar Plant in Sharm El Sheik Ahead of COP27

Ahead of the Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 27) that Egypt will host in November, authorities are launching a tender for the construction of a solar power plant at Sharm El-Sheikh Museum.

The awards under the tender are expected on August 15 and will call for a 280-kW plant to be erected by the start of COP27.  Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) has previously conducted a feasibility study leading to the green light for this project.

Since being named the host of the upcoming climate summit, Egypt has put in motion numerous renewable and sustainable projects. Earlier this month, it was announced that it is preparing to publish the world’s largest international tender for rooftop solar for the country’s New Administrative Capital (NAC).

In July, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed for the production of green hydrogen in Egypt. The MoU aims to establish a project to produce green fuels with investments estimated at $8 billion.

And in June, ACWA Power, a Saudi developer, inked a project agreement to develop a 1.1-GW wind project in Egypt, at an investment value of $1.5 billion.
