The Egypt to Sudan joint electricity grid has officially commenced operation. The new grid operation is the first phase of an electric interconnection project with Sudan. With the 170-km long interconnection, Egypt will provide Sudan with electric capacities up to 70 MW in this phase.
Under the terms of the bilateral agreement, Egypt and Sudan are funding the cost of the transmission lines on their respective sides of the border. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Energy the cost for its side is roughly $25 million and $20 million for the Sudanese.
The transmission lines extend from Toshka 2 processing stations in Egypt to Arqin transformers in Sudan. Government sources told Daily News Egypt that the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company has launched lines and transformer stations with capacity of 300 MW and a voltage of 220 KV, but some devices must be installed on the Sudanese side before the grids can operate at full capacity.
