Egypt’s First Solar Thermal Plant Receives Last Installation

SolarMillennium has announced that it has completed the last installation of almost 2,000 mirrored collector units at the 150 MW solar farm, according to BusinessGreen.com. The €250 million Kuraymat project, located around 100 km south of Cairo, is expected to be completed by Q4.

The announcement also adds to Egypt’s position as the fastest emerging renewable energy market in North Africa, particularly given news that government approved plans for a 120-MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez. Reuters reported yesterday that government officials have authorized Italian cement firm Italcementi to begin work on the wind farm, which will be located to the east of Cairo. The project is expected to be supplying electricity to Egypt’s national grid by 2012.
