Egypt’s Petrol and Environment Ministers Strike Agreement

Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Petroleum forged a deal to provide alternative fuels for power plants to help combat the country’s escalating power generation problems. However, the ministries continue to focus on conventional energy rather than diversifying more into renewable energy sources. The plan includes to build more natural gas stations although that is part of the country’s problem: currently generating 86% of its electricity via natural gas when it already struggles with meeting local demand.

The head of the Egyptian Electric Holding Co. (EEHC), Gaber El Desouky recommended private companies import fuel and cement factories operate via coal to help combat energy intensive industries’ gas usage. He said that the power sector was prepared to meet the increased load in electricity during the summer, hoping to expand the power generation sector by 3,000 MW. However, residents have been experiencing daily power outages during the winter months and electricity usage increases substantially with the desert climate.
