Egypt’s President Moves to Overtake Army Rule

Egypt saw a shake up among to its political climate with the newly appointed Minister of Defense and leader of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) announcing an early retirement in addition to constitutional changes.

The newly elected president Mohamed Morsi cancelled SCAF’s June 17 addendum to the constitution that gave the military a high level of autonomy. The leader also ordered the country’s top two generals, Hussein Tantawi and Sami Enan to retire. Tantawi served under Hosni Mubarak as a minister for 20 years and has been defense minister and the de facto head of state since Mubarak was ousted in early 2011. Enan has been serving as chief of staff.

Morsi also retired the Commander of the Navy, Mohab Memish, and appointed him as head of the Suez Canal Authority. Reda Hafez, the commander of the Air Force, was also retired and appointed as minister of military production. Mohamed El-Assar, the SCAF member in charge of armaments, was appointed as assistant to the minister of defense. The president’s last move was the appointment of Mahmoud Mekki, the deputy head of the Cassation Court, as his VP.
