Egypt’s Zafarana Wind Farm to Shut Down

According to officials at Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity, the country’s 30-MW Zafarana wind farm’s life cycle is coming to an end and will be shut down in 2021. The Zafarana wind farm was built in phases between 2000 and 2010 and is spread over 120 km, producing 550 MW of renewable energy.

The NREA has an aggressive strategy in place to bring more renewable energy sources online over the coming years with a 20% increase targeted by 2022. A massive solar complex is being constructed in the south at BenBan while construction work on the 250-MW West Bakr Wind farm began earlier this year. In December, French electric utility company Engie and its consortium of partners inaugurated the 262.5MW Ras Ghareb wind farm.
