Energy Efficient Lighting Network Planned for Nelson Mandela Bay

According to a report from South Africa’s Engineering News, state-owned Central Energy Fund’s (CEF) subsidiary CEF Sustainability is planning to provide the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area with an upgraded energy-efficient public lighting network. On July 7 the CEF said it hoped to implement the project by early 2009.

It is interesting to note that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is currently under construction and will host seven 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, including one semi-final.

David Nicol, the CEF Sustainability project manager, said that the organization hoped to have the detailed audit for the public lighting project complete by the end of 2008, and was targeting early 2009 to begin implementing the project.

CEF, the report said, has already requested proposals for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the proposed new public lighting network.

In light of its current severe electricity shortage, the South African government, utilities, and public and private organizations are increasing looking at how to implement more energy efficient programs. Currently a rash of green building projects are under construction or consideration, the Darling wind farm recently came online, and several other wind farms are under consideration.
