South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has announced plans to open 5 to 10 MW solar plants at its coal-fired stations beginning in 2013. The utility will present a final business scenario for the plants by Q1 2012, according to corporate services managing director Steve Lennon.
Eskom’s CEO Brian Dames said that three pilot PV projects at the company’s Lethabo and Kendal plants and the head office in Johannesburg would be in production by the end of the week. The pilot projects will have a combined capacity of about 1.5 MW, enough to power 1,700 homes.
