Various interconnection projects are in the works throughout the continent, but Ethiopia is quickly becoming an emerging power leader. The Ethiopia-Sudan Power Systems Interconnection in Sudan’s Gedaref commenced although the trial run began nearly one year ago in mid-December.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister HailemariamDesalegn and Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir inaugurated the distribution network that runs 321 km that could generate around $100 million to $150 million annually in revenue for Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy AlemayehuTegenu said that the project was necessary with the increase in cross-border trade pushing the demand for electricity in the region.
