On the heels of the announcement with Exxaro and India’s Tata Power, the South African JV Cennergi said that it will partner with the state-owned utility Eskom to bring renewable energy projects online. Cennergi hopes to produce 16 GW of renewable energy projects by 2025, according to executives at the company’s official launch last week.
While also targeting Namibia and Botswana, the 50/50 JV said that it has submitted solar and wind bids for the second round of South Africa’s renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) procurement program. Exxaro’s CEO Sipho Nkosi said, “We felt that as coal producers in South Africa, we should start immersing ourselves in [the renewable energy field].”
