Although Syria is experiencing an uprising like many other Arab nations, it has not deterred 13 companies from bidding to develop the country’s first privately owned wind project.
Syria hopes to award a contract to install and own up to 100 MW of wind-powered electricity with bids coming in from Denmark’s Vestas, Terna Energy of Greece, Spanish companies Fersa Energias Renovables and Ingenieria y Construccion, Turkey’s Fina Enerji Holdings, and Orascom Construction of Egypt. "No bidder has shown a desire to withdraw from the project due to the current unrest," Richard Kupisz, an associate director at the consultancy IPA Energy and Water Economics, told Bloomberg.
The wind power project, located at either Palmyra or Al Hijana, will be comprised of one or more wind farms that will be able to produce between 50 MW and 100 MW of power.
