South Africa held ground breaking ceremonies for four projects in mid-February. Construction has started on South Africa’s Dorper Wind Farm situated in the northern Eastern Cape. The 100-MW project will be an onshore facility housing 40 wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 2.5 MW. The turbines will be supplied by Nordex Energy South Africa (Pty) Ltd. which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German manufacturer, Nordex SE.
Late last year, in November 2012, the Dorper project company entered into a 20-year PPA with state-owned energy provider Eskom and associated Implementation Agreement with the Department of Energy, enabling it to break ground. Completion and commercial operation is expected in July 2014.
Globeleq Generation Ltd. started the construction of three renewable energy projects in South Africa including the 138 MW wind farm at Jeffreys Bay on the Eastern Cape and two 50 MW solar PV facilities located in the Northern Cape. All projects are expected to be operational in mid-2014.
