Alten Africa secured $50 million from Standard Bank of South Africa and Proparco for the construction of the Mariental solar power plant in Namibia.
With a capacity of 45 MW, the facility will be the most powerful of its kind in the country and in sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of South Africa.
The plant will be owned 51% by Alten Africa, 19% by NamPower, the national electricity company, and 30% by local investors such as First Place, Mangrove and Talyeni.
Namibia currently has two solar photovoltaic plants already operational. These are the Otjozondjupa Park plant (5 MW) and the Omburu Park power station (4.5 MW).
