Kenya expects to see its Ksh13.5 billion Garissa solar plant projectbe completed by September this year. The project is touted to be the largest in East and Central Africa.
The Garissa solar power project lies on an80-acre piece of land and consists of 300,000 solar panels. The project is part of the Kenyan government’s long-term program to replace the expensive and environmentally hazardous diesel-powered engines.
Speaking during an inspection tour at the plant, CEO of Rural Electrification Authority (REA) Peter Mbugua said that the project will inject an additional 54 MW of power into the national grid. He also revealed that the project is being implemented by the government but the funds for it were provided by EXIM of China.
On completion, the power from the plant will be connected to the national grid at the Raya sub-station.
