GE Plans 150 MW Wind Farm in Kenya

General Electric (GE) has announced plans to build a 150-MW wind farm in Ngong, Kenya as the East African nation looks to shift its power generation from hydropower. “We intend to shift our power source from hydro to renewable energy with a focus on geothermal, wind, and biomass,” Prime Minister Raila Odinga said at an event alongside GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt.

GE has made a pledge to help Kenya realize its plans as outlined in its Vision 2030, and the Kipeto wind farm is the single largest FDI in the East African country’s energy sector. The American company has already invested around $300 to $400 million in the project, scheduled to come online by 2015. The first phase of the plant will produce 100 MW with subsequent phases adding another 250 MW.
