Germany Gives Uganda $207 Million for Energy

Germany has announced that it will give Uganda a $207-million grant to help develop its renewable energy sector, expand regulation for its financial sector, and increase accountability, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Finance.

The country currently generates about 360 MW of electricity from hydropower and thermal power plants, and is underway with a 250-MW hydropower plant that is expected to come online in 2011. In June, however, the government announced in its national budget framework paper that it planned to cut energy spending by one-third in the next financial year from sh698.9 billion to sh482.5 billion.

The German investment will go toward Uganda’s clean water and sanitation programs with another portion looking to accelerate economic and social recovery in northern Uganda.
