Germany will implement a new solar tax becoming the first European country to charge owners of renewable energy plants for their own use of electricity. The proposal is expected to pass cabinet in April with final approval granted in August. The tax will be applicable to new rooftop solar installations above 10 kWh beginning in August. Individuals using their own solar-generated power will be required to pay a €0.04-kWh charge while self-consumers with up to 10 kWp PV capacity would be exempted from the tax (only making up 17%).
Opponents relate the proposal to charging residents for vegetables grown in their own garden, a price that is comparable to large-scale/export farmers.
