Over the next 50 years, Ghana is getting ready to increase its energy supply via renewable energy sources to improve its power generation. The Volta River Authority (VRA) will look into biofuels, wind, and solar energy while also utilizing existing sources like the Akosombo dam.
“We have already acquired land at Navrongo where solar energy would be tapped into to add up 10 MW of power to what is produced from the Akosombo dam. Meanwhile, researches have commenced into wind energy as well. “The power from Bui Power Project will also be added after it has been completed. All these will improve power supply in Ghana,” Special Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of VRA, Major John Gyasi Rtd. Said during an open day session at VRA’s Tema Thermal Power complex.
This is an important move for the West African country especially in light of its membership into Africa’s oil producing countries. It showcases Ghana’s desire, despite adding oil to its economy, to diversify its energy mix. “We must ensure that the oil is a blessing and not a curse, and we must use the oil to benefit all the people of Ghana,” commented Ghanaian President John Atta Mills.
