Ghana Revisits Biogas after Failed 2002 Project

Ghana had a biogas pilot project in 2002 to power Apollonia, but the results were unsuccessful. However, the technology may be reconsidered with an agreement signed with UNIDO to promote biogas technology.

The country’s current biogas plans are expected to provide 15% of a plant’s power needs, but engineers hope to add more facilities to achieve a 50% biogas power generation rate. Funded by South Korea, the project could see the technology reach commercial-scale not only for Ghana, but the West African region.

UNIDO Director General Kandeh Yumkella said, "Industrial-scale biogas technology enables industries that are currently dumping bio-waste in water bodies, in violation of national environmental protection laws, to comply with these laws and, in the process, produce heat and power to enhance their operations and productivity.”
