Ghana’s former president John AgyekumKufuor has asked for immediate steps to be undertaken to develop the Grand Inga hydropower project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He said that various nations in the continent should team up with the international community to develop the project which costs an estimated $80 billion.
The project has seen numerous delays, but upon completion, it could produce 40 GW of electricity. The former president said that the scheme could be a catalyst for “unprecedented era of industrialization in Africa and even have electricity for potential export to Europe.”Kufuor went on to describe the project as the “centerpiece of a grand vision to develop a continent-wide power system that will allow Africa’s industrial and manufacturing to take off.”
Most recently, Pretoria-based Public Investment Corp. said that it would contribute to the project’s funding. In November, the AfDB approved $68-million in financing for the Inga Site Development and Electricity Access Support Project (PASEL) which to help the development of the Grand Inga.
