In 2013, Alternative Energy Africa reported that Ghana could be the home to one of the continent’s largest solar power plants. And unlike many large-scale projects within the continent, this one is moving right along.
The Ghanaian government stopped funding new plants, and guarantees investors a fixed tariff for the first 10 years with bi-annual reviews thereafter. The country has two bodies regulating renewable energy, the Energy Commission and a Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, making Ghana a renewable energy haven for investors.
The Nzema solar power plant will be one of the largest of its kind in the world generating 155 MW of power. It will increase Ghana’s current generating capacity by 6% and will meet 20% of the government’s target of generating 10% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. It is slated to come online in October 2015, and with the country’s legislation, the project is headed in the right, timely direction.
