Ghana’s Takoradi Power Plant Expansion Underway

Abu Dhabi National Energy Co. (Taqa) announced that it received the requisite parliamentary approval from the Ghanaian government to expand the Takoradi 2 power plant. The addition will bring 110 MW, increasing energy production from 220 MW to 330 MW, will convert the existing plant to operate as a combined cycle.

 

Excess energy will be sold to the Volta River Authority (VRA) under the terms of its revised 25-year PPA. The plant is owned by Takoradi International Company LLC , a JV between Taqa which holds 90% and VRA with the remaining interest.

 

The expansion is expected to be commissioned in 2015, with the EPC contract valued at $260 million awarded to Japan’s Mitsui & Co. and Korea’s KEPCO. Construction is expected to start by August.
