General Electric (GE) will debut a new environmentally-friendly refrigerator to the US market that will not use the conventional chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) or hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant that studies have shown as having harmful effects on the environment.
Although previously established by German in 1993, the US will come onboard this year with a new hydrocarbon refrigerator option. The Germans sold its Greenfreeze fridge to over 400 million household units worldwide since its onset with manufacturers hopping on including Whirlpool, Haier, and Sanyo. So it’s only natural that US giant GE introduces America’s first hydrocarbon household fridge in June, but it will not be cheap. The 30-inch, HFC-free refrigerator would be part of GE’s luxury Monogram brand, selling for about $6,000 to $6,500.
GE is waiting for final approval from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Significant New Alternatives Program.
