A R3-million pilot project will see 70 South African taxis operate on dual-fuel blend in order to reduce carbon emissions.
Pretoria is one of the cities that will have its public transportation operating on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and petrol, according to the Gauteng Economic Development. The local Gauteng government established a strategic relationship with the SA National Taxi Association Council, the SA National Energy Research Institute, and Sasol.
"The project findings show an 11% reduction on the carbon dioxide, levels when switching the vehicles to LPG, which is one of the internationally recognized alternative energy sources that have a reduced harmful impact on the environment,” MEC Qedani Mahlangu said.
The next year will see about 150 taxis operating on the dual-fuel and more LPG refueling stations are expected to open to support the growing fleet of “green” transportation.
