Holland Still Keen to Invest Despite South Africa’s Bilateral Cancellation

South Africa cancelled its bilateral investment treaty with the Netherlands, but Dutch financiers do not seem fazed. Holland exported about $1.5 billion worth of goods to South Africa while receiving $2.8 billion worth of materials over the past year. In addition, about 350 Dutch firms operate in the African country employing about 10,000 people.

South Africa is getting rid of bilateral treaties that protect foreign investors although existing investments will still remain under the former treaty umbrellas for about 15 to 20 years. The country is instead offering the Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill, a coordination between trade policy framework and the government’s other policy objectives.
