Household Energy Safety Urges South Africa’s New Energy Minister to Take More Measures

The Household Energy Safety Association of Southern Africa (HESASA) is asking South Africa’s Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson take renewables even further by making the sector more available for residences. It is estimated that 256,000 fatalities are caused by household fires throughout the world with a Medical Research Council study stating that 3.2% of South Africa’s population would suffer from burn injuries.

The organization’s CEO said: “We hope that [Joemat-Pettersson] will give more emphasis to the previous discussions we have had with her now new department to collaborate together in an effort to curb shack fires and other household energy incidents that affect the lives of numerous families and communities in the country.”

He continued: “All energy sources that are used by households, not just electricity, must be factored into the policy. We would also like to collaborate with her on jointly doing practical interventions in communities around issues of energy safety,”
