It appears that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has changed its mind regarding Ghana’s nuclear ambitions organizing a conference, with the collaboration of the African Regional and Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), to explore the country’s nuclear energy program.
Shortly after Japan’s Fukushima crisis, the IAEA warned of the country’s attempt at building nuclear reactors without much political support and the infrastructure to properly carry out such an ambitious undertaking. Ghana’s Energy Ministry is attempting to establish a Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (Nepio) that will coordinate the activities of all stakeholder institutions involved with the planning of the nuclear power project, recommended by the IAEA. A nuclear power unit has been set up to address issues associated with the planning and implementation of a nuclear power program.
