Hydro Alternative Energy, Inc. (HAE) has announced that it would develop a hydrokinetic energy project in eThekwini Municipality in Durban. Backed by the local government, the project aims to harvest ocean energy into electricity to be supplied into the grid.
HAE will identify the best sites to install and moor offshore power generation systems. Afterwards, an environmental impact assessment will be conducted and a power generation license will be issued by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).
Under the agreement, HAE will develop, install, and test a power plant with a 50 MW capacity. Once details of connecting to the municipality’s electricity distribution network have been finalized and a PPA executed, electricity generation will commence.
