Israel and Egypt: Potential Partners for Solar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on a recent trip to Egypt, proposed a joint solar energy project to Egypt President Hosni Mubarak.

Under the proposal, Egypt would provide the land for solar power plants in the Sinai with Israel supplying the technology and operation of the facilities. Other factors must be considered first before developing such a scheme. One would be the high transmission costs. A potentially even greater issue is the fragile political infrastructure between the two countries, that while although it appears stable, would undoubtedly upset many locals which could make such a project face more difficulties.
