Japan Moves to East Africa Embarking on Kenya’s Geothermal Sector

Japan has announced a Sh23.4 billion loan to Kenya in order to further develop the East African country’s geothermal energy sector. Kenya aims to generate at least 500 MW of geothermal energy by 2030 with the loan aiding in the construction of two new units at the Olkaria I geothermal plant.

Japan is touching down in Africa giving China a shove as it recently announced an agreement with Morocco to donate $7.4 million for the largest PV plant in Africa, striking a deal with Botswana for the construction of a modern solar power station in Gaborone, and giving a grant to Malawi in order to reconstruct the South Rukuru Bridge and to install a solar electricity generation system at the Kamuzu International Airport.
