Kenya has added some 50 MW of thermal generated electricity. The addition of the thermal power comes from independent power producer Aggreko. The company has increased capacity at the Embakasi plant from 60 MW to 110 MW.
Sylvester Makaka of the Kenya Association of Manufactures said the increase in thermal power output raises the country’s total emergency power capacity to 150 MW. The government is looking for a total of 180 MW of power for emergency generation. "If need arises, the remaining 30 MW will be generated from Lanet," said Makaka.
According to an article in Business Daily, the additional thermal power has allowed for KenGen to begin refurbishing hydro units at the Kiambere power plant. Once the refurbishment is complete, Kiambere is expected to have an additional 20 MW to add to the national grid.
