Kenya Power & Lighting Co. has signed a 20-year agreement to buy 300 MW of electricity from the Lake Turkana Wind Power Ltd. project. The Lake Turkana region will house the largest wind farm in Africa with 365 wind turbines installed. The project, expected to be complete in 2012, is anticipated to cost around £533 million and have a 300-MW capacity. The wind farm should begin generating 50 megawatts of electricity in the H1 2011, Henk Hutting, managing director of Lake Turkana, said today at the signing ceremony in Nairobi on Sunday.
Electricity will be purchased at a fixed rate of $0.10 kWh for the duration of the contract to offset fluctuations in the price of fuel used to generate power, Kenya Power’s Managing Director Joseph Njoroge said at the signing ceremony.
