Kenya Wants UAE to Host IRENA

Kenya has announced that it would support the UAE’s bid to host the headquarters of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, Kenya’s Ambassador to the UAE Mohammad Gello said.

"Kenya is trying to be a member of IRENA and we will support the UAE in the voting [for headquarters]", Gello told Gulf News.

"We think headquarters of international agencies should not be concentrated in only one part of the world," he said. If the UAE hosts IRENA’s headquarters, it will be beneficial for developing countries like Kenya, according to Gello. Kenya hosts the headquarters of United Nations Environment Program in Nairobi and is a proponent of clean energy, he added. "We are trying to develop renewable energy from wind and sun."

Meanwhile, Yacoob Abba Omar, the South African Ambassador, said he was personally impressed with the UAE’s commitment towards renewable energy. About the UAE’s IRENA bid, he said South Africa will take a decision soon.
