KPLC and IFC to Reduce Power Losses

Kenya’s power utility, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), launched a joint program with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to reduce technical and commercial losses in the electricity grid.

The initiative will require an investment of 80 million shillings which will be borne by the parties at 50% each.

The program will last two years and will enable the state company to benefit from training and support from the IFC Water and Energy Advisory Department.

"For the fiscal year ended in June, we reduced losses by 18.8%. While this is an improvement from 19.4% last year, we have not yet achieved a one-digit reduction rate," said Ken Tarus, Executive Director of the KPLC.

The Kenyan government plans to raise the electrification rate to 40% by 2020.
