A delegation from Kuwait visited Pretoria, South Africa to examine the viability of South Africa’s research and technical capabilities.
The group, led by director general of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi, visited a company in Pretoria that specializes in the production of fourth generation reactors. These reactors are known to be 50% more efficient than conventional reactors and the delegation inspected the safety measures and regulations the South African company has in place for dealing with relevant international agencies and organizations. The Kuwaiti scientists also examined sites that have a Safari-one reactor that is designed to run on highly-enriched uranium built in the 1960s in collaboration with the US.
The delegation also researched the South African bio-program, examined laboratories of alternative energy projected to secure up to 100 MW of energy, and buildings of several other scientific institutions specializing in the climate, space, and water resources. Dr. Al-Mutairi added that the delegation discussed with leading staff of these establishments projected frameworks of cooperation between Kuwait and the African nation for sake of experience exchange in these various domains.
