Libya is working to boost power generation and toward that end recently took steps to increase the power generation capacity in the eastern part of the country through an agreement to build a new thermal power plant.
The agreement for the thermal power plant, to be located in Tobruk, is with Greek firm Mytilineos.
Mytilineos’ subsidiary METKA signed a deal with the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) to proceed with an EPC contract to build the new plant in Tobruk.
A ceremony marking the agreement was held in Tripoli and GECOL representatives from Benghazi and Tobruk, plus other officials from Libya and Greece, attended.
The new facility will burn either natural gas or distillate fuel oil and have 650 MW of capacity. Some media reports put generating capacity as high as 740 MW.
Construction will include the supply and installation of four General Electric GT13E2 gas turbines in open cycle configuration, together with all associated balance of plant equipment and a 220/66-kV substation, the company said in a statement.
This is the first project for Mytilineos in Libya.
