Prysmian Group is preparing to help with the reconstruction of Libya tacking its infrastructure for the country’s energy and telecommunications industries as a result of renewable energy developments and needed power interconnectors. The company acquired a €50 million contract to supply 203 km of high voltage 220 kV AC cables and related network components for the upgrade of the electricity grids operated by the General Electric C. of Libya (GECOL) in Tripoli and Benghazi.
GECOL is the country’s electric utility, and over the last 10 years, has more than doubled its energy production. The contract, due to be carried out on behalf of PEWCO (Public Works Electric Company), includes also the supply of optical cables for grid monitoring.
Prysmian already had a presence in the country prior to its revolution, being involved in major projects for the development of both new broadband telecom networks and high voltage power grids. With its latest acquisition, the group has increased its power transmission orders to over €2.3 billion.
